Frequently asked questions
How are the visits organised ?
The Laugerie-Basse shelters are open to the public, with a fifteen-minute film followed by a tour of the archaeological site. The Grand Roc cave takes the form of a guided tour lasting around forty minutes in French, with a translation booklet if required. Allow 45 minutes for each site.
I can't find a rubbish bin. Where can I put my rubbish?
The Grotte du Grand Roc has adopted an innovative ecological initiative by becoming a ‘dustbin-free site’. The aim of the scheme is to encourage visitors to take responsibility for their waste management, reduce the amount of waste on the cultural site and raise public awareness of the general problem of waste production. Visitors are encouraged to take their waste home with them or download the Bluetooth mobile application ‘SMD3-mon service déchets’. This application can be used to open household waste containers and pay online. It is aimed at residents of the Dordogne as well as visiting tourists.
I have a twin ticket : are the prehistoric shelters at Laugerie-Basse and the Grand Roc cave far apart?
The two sites are located along the cliff, 200 metres apart.
If I buy a multi-site pass, do I have to visit all the sites on the same day ?
No. When booking, you must choose a date for each site. Please note that Lascaux IV and the Parc du Thot are 7km apart by car, and the Laugerie-Basse and Grand Roc sites take 35 minutes to reach Les Eyzies. You must choose a time and date for the guided visits to Lascaux IV and Grand Roc. Le Thot and Laugerie Basse can be visited at your convenience.
Is it possible to visit the cave with small children ?
Please note that pushchairs and baby back carriers are not permitted.
Is the car park easily accessible ?
Yes, the sites have a large free car park below the cliffs, with access via a short climb up to the reception building. To visit the Grand Roc, you need to arrive 10 minutes early to allow time to climb up to the cave.
Is the cave easily accessible ?
Access to the cave is 200 metres after the ticket office, via a 70-step staircase that leads up to the lookout where the tour starts.
The cave is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
What is the temperature inside the cave ? Do I need special equipment?
The temperature in the cave is 16°C in both winter and summer. We therefore advise you to bring a jacket and possibly closed shoes, given the humidity in the cave. The tour is easy to get to.
What items are prohibited ?
Aerosols of any kind, bags and suitcases larger than 15 liters, dangerous objects (cutters, knives, gas cylinders, etc.) and strollers.
It is also strictly forbidden to bring pets or smoke on site.
